Playing House is an American sitcom series that aired on the USA Network from 2014 to 2017. Created by Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham, who also star in the show, it follows the story of two best friends, Maggie Caruso and Emma Crawford, who reunite in their childhood hometown to raise Maggie's baby together.
The show begins when Maggie, who is pregnant and going through a divorce, invites Emma, a successful businesswoman living in China, to come back to Pinebrook, Connecticut to help her through the pregnancy. However, their plans to simply be roommates and raise the baby together rapidly turn into a full-time job as they have to navigate their way through the new challenges facing them.
The show is well-known for its fantastic cast, which includes Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele, Don't Think Twice), who plays Mark, Maggie's police-officer brother, and Zach Woods (Silicon Valley, Veep), who plays Zach, a nerdy guy who harbors a crush on Emma. Brad Morris (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World) rounds up the cast, playing Maggie's ex-husband, who causes his fair share of problems during the show.
One of the key aspects of Playing House is its depiction of female friendship. The show's creators, St. Clair and Parham, have been best friends in real life for over 20 years, and they bring much of their experience to the screen. The relationship between Maggie and Emma is genuinely heartwarming and funny, providing a refreshing take on female friendships in TV that often fall into the trap of being catty or competitive.
Another great aspect of Playing House is its unique brand of humor. The show is not afraid to be silly and absurd, but it also manages to be heartfelt and sincere. It's the kind of show that can have you laughing out loud one moment and tearing up the next. The chemistry between the cast is also fantastic, with St. Clair and Parham bouncing off each other perfectly, and Keegan-Michael Key delivering some of the show's funniest lines.
Playing House is also notable for its willingness to tackle tough subjects. Over the course of its three seasons, the show addresses topics like divorce, cancer, and infertility, but does so with sensitivity and humor. It never feels like the show is trying to be too heavy-handed or preachy, but it still manages to effectively dramatize the struggles that people face in their daily lives.
Overall, Playing House is a delightful sitcom that manages to be both silly and heartfelt, with a fantastic cast that provides plenty of laughs and heartwarming moments. With its focus on female friendship and willingness to tackle tough subjects, it stands out from other shows in the genre, making it a must-watch for anyone looking for a good laugh and a good cry.
