In the second episode of Platinum Hit's first season, titled "Dance Floor Royalty", the remaining contestants are tasked with creating and performing original songs with an emphasis on dance music. The episode kicks off with a brief recap of the previous week's challenge, which saw the eight songwriters split into pairs to write and perform love songs. Ultimately, Jackie Tohn and Sonyae Elise were declared the winners, while Team Scotty Granger and Blessing Offor found themselves on the bottom.
As the remaining contestants gather in the studio, host Jewel introduces them to guest mentor Donna Summer, the Queen of Disco herself. Summer offers the contestants advice on how to write hit dance tracks and shares some of her own experiences in the music industry. She also encourages the songwriters to think about what makes dance music unique and how they can infuse their own personal experiences and styles into the genre.
After a brief songwriting session, the contestants head to the studio to record their tracks. As they work with producers and engineers, tensions begin to rise among the songwriters. Jes Hudak, who has been struggling to find her footing in the competition, becomes frustrated when her producer starts criticizing her lyrics and melody. Meanwhile, Johnny Marnell and Nick Nittoli butt heads over their collaboration, with Johnny feeling like Nick is overshadowing him and Nick accusing Johnny of not putting in enough effort.
With the recording session over, the contestants head to the stage to perform their songs in front of the judges and a live audience. Jackie and Sonyae once again impress with their catchy dance track, while Brian Judah and Scotty Granger bounce back from their bottom placement last week with a high-energy performance. Jes Hudak's song falls flat, however, and the judges criticize her lack of connection to the dance genre. Johnny Marnell and Nick Nittoli's collaboration also fails to impress, with the judges noting that the song doesn't stand out enough in a crowded dance market.
After a tense deliberation, the judges reveal that Jackie and Sonyae are once again the winners of the challenge. In a surprising twist, however, they also announce that there will be no elimination this week. Instead, the songwriters will have a chance to redeem themselves in next week's challenge. As the episode comes to a close, the contestants reflect on the pressure of the competition and the growing stakes as they continue to vie for the title of Platinum Hit.
