In the season 2 premiere of Person of Interest, titled "The Contingency," we pick up from the explosive season 1 finale where Detective Carter has found out about Reese's vigilante activities and Finch has disappeared. As the episode starts, Reese is in a diner, trying to keep a low profile while Carter is tracking him down. Meanwhile, Finch is stuck in a situation with dangerous people who want to know more about the machine he created.
Reese gets an unexpected call from Finch, who gives him new identities, money, and new instructions for their work. This includes a new mission outline with various social security numbers of people who they must save. Reese also receives a new gun, courtesy of Finch. The first number on the list is that of an attorney, who had a near-death experience and now has secretly killed people. Reese and Finch must make sure he doesn't get caught.
In the meantime, Carter is questioning Finch's former associate, Nathan Ingram. She's trying to understand why he was so secretive and what connection he had with the mysterious person behind the machine. As she digs deeper, Carter receives a call from the attorney lawyer's associate, who is seeking help to find him. She investigates, which leads her to Finch, who is hiding in a hospital.
Reese goes undercover as the lawyer, pretending to be a killer who can make the charges disappear. Meanwhile, Finch is helping him remotely via cameras and listening devices. They finally find the lawyer, who has taken some hostages. Reese tries to negotiate with him but is unable to convince him to surrender. This results in a gunfight where Reese saves the hostages and kills the lawyer.
Carter is distracted by a call from Reese, who gives her a burner phone and instructions to help him with any future cases. He then disappears with Finch, leaving Carter to wonder who they are and what their connections are with the number of crimes they seem to have suddenly prevented.
Overall, "The Contingency" delivers a fast-paced and suspenseful episode that sets up the plot for the rest of the season. It introduces new characters, storylines, and brings back some characters from season 1. The episode shows that Reese and Finch have a new system to operate under, and Detective Carter is getting closer to uncovering their secret identities.
