Ep 21. Many Happy Returns

John Reese is back in New York City, following his mission in Ordos, China. He walks into a local bar, where he meets a waitress named Diane Hanson. She recognizes him and tells him that she knows who he is and who he's looking for. She hands Reese a letter and asks him to deliver it to her sister. Even though Reese is hesitant at first, he eventually agrees.

Reese goes to see Diane's sister, Jessica Arndt, but he quickly discovers that Jessica died two years ago in a car accident. Reese sets out to find out who is behind the letter and why they wanted him to deliver it. Meanwhile, Carter is investigating a series of murders in the city, all of which seem to be connected to a wealthy businessman named Peter Yogorov.

Reese discovers that Jessica was married to a man named Peter Arndt. He goes to see him and learns that Jessica was pregnant when she died. According to Peter, someone has been sending him letters from Jessica every year on her birthday. Peter also reveals that Jessica was involved in corporate espionage before her death.

Reese tracks down one of Jessica's former colleagues and learns that she was working on a project that involved creating a fake identity online. The colleague also reveals that Jessica had a backup plan in case anything went wrong. Reese realizes that the letter he received from Diane was part of that backup plan.

Meanwhile, Carter teams up with a detective named Cal Beecher to investigate Yogorov. They discover that Yogorov has been manipulating people into committing crimes for him, and that he is planning something big. Carter and Beecher manage to foil Yogorov's plan, but Beecher is killed in the process.

Reese discovers that the person behind the letters is actually Jessica herself. She faked her own death in order to start a new life with her unborn child. She had been sending the letters to Peter every year, but she knew that he would eventually stop believing that she was alive. That's why she sent the letter to Diane, knowing that Reese would eventually find it and deliver it to her sister.

Reese realizes that Jessica is still alive and tells Finch about the situation. Finch is hesitant to get involved, but Reese insists that they help Jessica start a new life. They track her down and arrange for her to get a new identity and start over.

In the end, Reese reflects on the fact that he and Jessica are both outsiders, looking for a new start in life. He also wonders about the other people whose lives he has touched, and whether he will ever be able to make a difference in their lives as well.
