In the first episode, titled "Pilot," we are introduced to the main characters of the show. The protagonist, John Reese (Jim Caviezel), is a former CIA agent who has become a homeless alcoholic after the death of his girlfriend. One day, he is approached by a mysterious man named Mr. Finch (Michael Emerson), who offers him a job. Mr. Finch is a reclusive billionaire who has created a computer program that can predict future crimes based on data from various surveillance systems.
Mr. Finch recruits Reese to help him prevent these crimes from happening. Using the program, Mr. Finch is able to provide Reese with the Social Security number of a person who will be involved in a violent crime in the future. Reese then goes to investigate and intervene before the crime can happen.
In the first episode, we see Reese and Mr. Finch prevent a kidnapping. With the help of the program, they are able to determine that a young lawyer named Diane Hanson (Natalie Zea) is in danger. Reese poses as her bodyguard and follows her around the city. He ultimately saves her from being kidnapped by her own partner at her law firm.
Throughout the first episode, there are flashbacks to Reese's past, giving us more insight into his character. We learn that he was a highly skilled CIA operative who has a troubled past and has become disillusioned with the government and its role in world events. Mr. Finch also has a mysterious past, and we see him interacting with people who question his motives and the morality of what they are doing.
The show also introduces us to two police officers who are investigating the case. Detectives Lionel Fusco (Kevin Chapman) and Joss Carter (Taraji P. Henson) are both skeptical of Reese's motives but are also impressed with his skills. At the end of the episode, it is revealed that Mr. Finch has been watching Reese for some time and has chosen him specifically for this job.
Overall, the first episode of Person of Interest sets up the premise of the series and introduces us to the key characters.
