Asylum is the eighth episode of the second season of Perception, a crime-drama television series. The episode aired on August 27, 2013, and was directed by Ken Biller.
Dr. Daniel Pierce (Eric McCormack), a neuropsychiatrist and professor, is tasked with helping the FBI solve a crime involving a murder that was committed in an asylum for the criminally insane. The victim is a nurse who worked in the asylum, and the suspects are the patients and the staff.
To solve the crime, Pierce has to go undercover as a patient in the asylum. He pretends to have schizophrenia and is admitted to the facility. Pierce's partner, FBI agent Kate Moretti (Rachael Leigh Cook), stays outside to gather information and keep an eye on Pierce through a hidden camera.
Pierce's cover is quickly blown when he is recognized by a patient named Jerry (Arye Gross), who was a former student of Pierce's and knows that he is not a patient. Jerry is a paranoid schizophrenic who believes that he is being framed for the murder. He asks Pierce to help him prove his innocence.
Pierce uncovers several clues that lead him to believe that the murderer is one of the staff members. He finds evidence that the staff members have been neglecting and mistreating the patients, and that some of them have been administering harmful drugs to the patients. Pierce also discovers that the murderer had a motive that was related to a secret that the victim found out about the staff.
As Pierce continues to investigate, he faces several challenges, including being sedated by the staff and having his cover blown to the patients. However, he manages to find the evidence he needs to solve the case.
In the end, Pierce and Moretti gather the staff and patients together and reveal the identity of the murderer. The staff member is taken into custody, and the patients are promised better treatment and care. Pierce and Jerry reconcile, and Jerry is released from the asylum.
Asylum is a gripping and suspenseful episode that showcases the talents of both Eric McCormack and Rachael Leigh Cook. The episode is well-written and well-paced, with several twists and turns that keep the audience guessing until the very end. The portrayal of the patients and the staff in the asylum is also excellent, with each character having a unique personality and backstory. Overall, Asylum is a must-watch for fans of Perception and crime dramas in general.
