Dr. Daniel Pierce, a neuroscience professor at the Chicago Lake Michigan University, is introduced as the lead character of the show in the first episode titled "Pilot." Pierce is a genius and also a paranoid schizophrenic who often hallucinates and loses touch with reality. Despite his condition, he is an accomplished professor with a sharp mind and an unconventional way of thinking. Pierce's abilities are put to the test when he is called upon by an old friend, Special Agent Kate Moretti of the FBI, to help solve a high-profile murder case.
The pilot episode starts with Pierce giving a lecture to a group of students on the topic of perception. His lecture is unconventional, using unorthodox methods that draw on his personal experiences as a schizophrenic. During the lecture, Pierce begins to experience a hallucination, which shakes him up and interrupts his speech. His teaching assistant, Max Lewicki, comes to his aid and takes him to the office to recover.
Following the lecture, Kate Moretti visits Pierce in his office. She seeks his help in solving a murder case that has left the FBI baffled. A young woman named Miranda Bloom was found dead in her apartment, and the FBI is yet to find any credible leads. Moretti hopes that Pierce's unique abilities and unconventional thinking can help them solve the case.
Initially, Pierce is reluctant to help Moretti, stating that he has a lot of work to do. However, after realizing that the case poses an interesting challenge, he agrees to help. Pierce begins his investigation by analyzing the crime scene photos that are taken by Moretti's team. He quickly notices inconsistencies with the evidence that has been collected so far and begins to suspect that the FBI has missed a critical piece of evidence.
Pierce enlists the help of his teaching assistant, Max Lewicki, to assist with the investigation. Max is initially hesitant to help, but Pierce convinces him that his talents will be valuable in solving the case. Together, they scour the crime scene and come across a clue that the FBI missed - a simulation of a computer-generated crime scene.
The simulation leads them to a software company called Linden Global, where Pierce discovers that Miranda Bloom was a software engineer who had uncovered some sensitive information about the company. Linden Global was dismissing her as paranoid, and Pierce believes that they may be behind her murder. The software company's CEO, Andrew Wiles, is amongst the prime suspects.
Moretti and Pierce organize a meeting with Wiles at Linden Global's headquarters under the pretext of discussing a job opportunity for Pierce. During the meeting, Pierce exposes his suspicions about Linden Global's involvement in Bloom's murder, and Wiles becomes uneasy. He denies any involvement but inadvertently reveals a crucial piece of information that ultimately leads to the resolution of the case.
In a dramatic and action-packed climax, the team discovers evidence that implicates a group of Linden Global employees in Bloom's murder. Pierce uses his insight and perception to piece together the information that Max has unearthed, and together with Moretti, they bring down the culprits.
