In season 4 episode 7 of People Magazine Investigates, titled "Law & Murder," the focus is on a controversial case in Florida that led to questions about the state's justice system. In 1997, a wealthy real estate developer named Gus Boulis was gunned down in his car on a busy street in Fort Lauderdale. Despite many potential suspects, the police initially had no leads in the case. However, a break came when a local hustler named Anthony "Little Tony" Ferrari was arrested on an unrelated charge and began bragging to his fellow inmates about his involvement in the murder for hire of Boulis.
The case against Little Tony relied heavily on the testimony of another accomplice, James "Pudgy" Fiorillo, who agreed to cooperate with authorities in exchange for a reduced sentence. Little Tony was eventually convicted and sentenced to life in prison, while his alleged co-conspirator, former Miami Dolphins player and businessman Adam Kidan, entered into a plea deal and also received a reduced sentence.
However, the case became more complicated when it emerged that Kidan and his business partner Jack Abramoff had purchased the SunCruz Casinos company, which Boulis had founded, through fraudulent means involving a fake wire transfer. Boulis was allegedly killed because he was attempting to regain control of the company.
The episode explores the various twists and turns in this complex case, including allegations of witness tampering, corruption, and abuse of power within the Broward County Sheriff's Office. It also features interviews with key players in the case, including Fiorillo, Kidan, and former SunCruz executive Konstantinos "Gus" Boulis, who is interviewed posthumously through footage from a deposition.
Through a combination of archival footage, interviews, and expert analysis, "Law & Murder" offers a thorough and compelling account of a case that exposed some of the flaws and failings of the Florida justice system. The episode sheds light on the dangers of unchecked ambition and the high stakes of business dealings in the shadowy world of organized crime.
