This World Is Our Hell is the fifth episode of the third season of the supernatural drama series Penny Dreadful which is set in Victorian-era London. The episode begins as Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) continues her journey to find the truth about the forces that are pursuing her. She visits a psychiatrist named Dr. Seward (Patti LuPone) seeking hypnosis to recall her memories which is a pivotal point of the episode.
Meanwhile, Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) and Hecate Poole (Sarah Greene) come across an American Indian tribe that has been slaughtered and they realize that they are being hunted by a group of bounty hunters. After a brief, but bloody battle, they escape and decide to split up. Ethan goes to London to try and rescue his friend Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) who has been captured by a witch named Kaetenay (Wes Studi) and is being held for ransom. Hecate, on the other hand, goes to find her mother, the powerful witch, Evelyn Poole (Helen McCrory) to try and get her help in finding Malcolm.
In another part of the city, Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and Lily (Billie Piper) continue their quest to avenge the women who have suffered at the hands of men. They lure two men into an alley and brutally murder them, sending a message to all men that the night belongs to women now.
Back at Dr. Seward's office, Vanessa is finally able to recall a memory from her childhood in which she and her best friend Mina Harker (Olivia Llewellyn) attended a séance where they first encountered the evil forces that have been pursuing her. The memory also reveals that Vanessa has a connection to Dracula, who has been the source of her torment since the beginning of the series.
Overall, This World Is Our Hell is an intense and action-packed episode that sets up the rest of the season for a clash between the forces of good and evil. It offers some revealing insights into the characters' histories and motivations, particularly Vanessa who has been a central figure since the beginning of the show. The episode leaves things hanging in a tantalizing way that is sure to keep viewers hooked for the next installment.
