Ep 1. Santa Muerte

In the first episode of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, viewers are transported to 1938 Los Angeles where tensions are high between the city's Mexican American population and the local police force. The episode opens with a ritual sacrifice meant to appease the Goddess of Death, Santa Muerte. Raul's involvement with the Pachucos puts him at odds with his family and leaves viewers questioning his motives for joining the group.

As tensions between different factions in the city continue to rise, Magda reveals herself to be a formidable force, embodying different personas throughout the episode. From a blonde Nazi follower to a seductive waitress, Magda is a shape-shifting force meant to manipulate those around her and further her own diabolical agenda.

The episode also introduces viewers to a new character, Sister Molly (Kerry Bishé), a popular radio evangelist with a huge following in the city. Sister Molly quickly becomes a point of fascination for both the public and Detective Vega, who becomes deeply intrigued by her message and her public persona.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels' first episode, "Santa Muerte," sets the stage for a season full of political upheaval, impending danger, and supernatural elements.
