Peg + Cat is an animated series aimed at preschoolers that is designed to introduce basic mathematical concepts to young children in a fun and engaging way. In season 1 episode 7, titled "The Dinosaur Problem/The Beethoven Problem," Peg and Cat are faced with not one, but two problems to solve.
In "The Dinosaur Problem," Peg and Cat are playing a game of "20 Questions" when they come across a very mysterious creature hiding behind a bush. As they begin to ask questions to figure out what it is, they quickly realize that they must be dealing with a dinosaur. This discovery is exciting, but it also creates a problem; how will they identify this dinosaur and return it to its rightful time period?
As Peg and Cat explore the world of dinosaurs, they encounter a number of challenges that require them to use their math skills to solve problems. For example, they must figure out how long it will take for the dinosaur to grow back its tail, and they must use measurement tools to determine the size of the dinosaur's footprints. Along the way, they learn about different types of dinosaurs and the ways in which they lived millions of years ago.
In "The Beethoven Problem," Peg and Cat are trying to help their friend Ramone win a music competition. Ramone is an excellent guitar player, but he needs a bit of help with his rhythm. When they learn that the competition will feature a performance of Beethoven's "Fifth Symphony," Peg and Cat realize that there is a math problem hidden within the music.
Together, they explore the concept of patterns and repetition in music and discover that these patterns are what make a piece of music sound pleasing to the ear. They also use their math skills to identify the pattern in the famous four-note opening of the "Fifth Symphony." Finally, they help Ramone by using the pattern to create a brand new song that is sure to impress the judges.
As always, Peg + Cat is a fun, educational series that emphasizes problem-solving and math skills.
