In Paula's Best Dishes season 5 episode 9, titled "Taste of the Town," Paula Deen takes viewers on a tour of some of her favorite local spots in Savannah, Georgia. Rather than showcasing her own recipes, Paula invites some of the city's most beloved chefs and restaurateurs to join her in the kitchen and share their signature dishes.
First up is Ted Paskevich from the popular Tybee Island restaurant, The Crab Shack. He and Paula whip up a classic southern Low Country Boil, complete with shrimp, corn, potatoes, and sausage. Ted shares his tips for cooking the perfect seafood boil, including his secret blend of spices.
Next, Paula meets up with Kelly Yambor from the Savannah Sweets Candy Store to make a batch of Kelly's famous pralines. Paula admits that she has never been able to master the art of praline-making, and Kelly is happy to share her tips for getting the candy just right. She even throws in a recipe for pecan cookies, which pair perfectly with the pralines.
The third guest chef is Mashama Bailey from The Grey, a sophisticated restaurant housed in a restored 1938 Greyhound Bus Station. Mashama shows Paula how to make a hearty lamb tagine with apricots, which she serves over a bed of couscous. Paula marvels at the flavors and textures of the dish, and Mashama explains her inspiration for the recipe.
Finally, Paula visits with Mark and Kerry Richter from the Olde Pink House, a 1771 mansion turned restaurant that is known for its elegant southern cuisine. Mark and Kerry prepare a beautiful shrimp and grits dish, which they garnish with a creamy Tasso ham gravy. Paula can't get enough of the rich, spicy flavor of the sauce, and the Richters share their tricks for making it just right.
Throughout the episode, Paula chats with her guests about their backgrounds and what drew them to cooking. She also shares some of her own memories of Savannah and its vibrant culinary scene. As always, she adds her own personal touch to each dish, making sure that every bite is full of flavor and love. By the end of the episode, viewers will have not only learned some new recipes, but also gained an appreciation for the unique flavors and personalities that make Savannah's food scene so special.
