Leslie Knope and the Parks and Recreation Department organize the annual Pawnee High School prom at the request of a group of local teenagers. Leslie is thrilled to take on this project since she has never attended a prom herself and is excited about seeing the event through the eyes of the younger generation.
The department is divided into various committees overseeing different aspects of the prom, including the theme, music, decorations, and food. Tom Haverford leads the committee responsible for the theme and decides on an Arabian Nights theme, complete with a live camel as a centerpiece.
Meanwhile, Chris Traeger, Ben Wyatt, and Ron Swanson team up to handle the food and beverage aspect of the prom. They devise a menu consisting of pizza, ice cream, and other junk foods to cater to the teenagers' tastes.
As preparations for the prom continue, Leslie receives a surprise visitor in the form of her former love interest and ex-boyfriend Dave Sanderson. Dave's return creates tension between Leslie and her current boyfriend Ben, who becomes increasingly jealous as the night progresses.
The teenagers ultimately enjoy the prom despite some mishaps along the way, including the camel defecating on the dance floor and some dents in the gymnasium floor caused by the more exuberant dancers. In the end, Leslie reflects on the success of the event and the significance of prom as a rite of passage for young people.
Throughout the episode, various romantic relationships are explored, including the love triangle between Leslie, Ben, and Dave, as well as the blossoming romance between Tom and Lucy. Additionally, the episode touches on themes of nostalgia, youth, and the importance of community involvement in shaping the next generation.
