Two brothers, Wirt and Greg, continue on their mysterious journey through the forest in Over The Garden Wall season 1 episode 7, titled The Ringing of the Bell. As they progress, they come across a massive bell tower guarded by a mysterious old woman. She tells them the only way to release her from her curse is to ring the bell nine times and promises to reveal the location of the way home if they can achieve this.
Despite the old woman’s warning of danger, Wirt and Greg scale the bell tower and begin ringing the bell. However, as they near the end of their task, they realize that the curse on the old woman is stronger than they anticipated, and they may be in over their heads.
As they ring the bell, strange visions and hallucinations start to plague them, and they are forced to confront their greatest fears. Wirt learns about his own self-doubt, while Greg confronts his fear of losing those he loves. Throughout the episode, Wirt and Greg must use their quick wit and bravery to outsmart and overcome the obstacles that stand in their way, all while ringing the bell.
The episode is filled with beautiful, awe-inspiring visuals as the brothers climb higher and higher up the tower, and the tension builds with every ring of the bell. The haunting score and atmospheric sound design add to the eerie, otherworldly feeling of the episode.
As Wirt and Greg continue their task, they must face creatures that inhabit the tower, including a malevolent, sentient cactus and an army of grotesque, skeletal apparitions, all while staying true to their moral compass and making sure to protect each other at all times.
The episode ends with a stunning twist that will leave viewers questioning everything they thought they knew about the show. The Ringing of the Bell is a masterclass in storytelling, taking the viewer on a rollercoaster ride of emotions that stays with them long after it’s over. It’s a mystery, a horror, and a coming-of-age story all rolled into one, and it’s an episode not to be missed.
