In "Outlander" season 4 episode 7, titled "Down the Rabbit Hole," Brianna Randall travels back in time from the 20th century to the 18th century to reunite with her mother, Claire Fraser, and Jamie Fraser. The episode showcases Brianna’s journey as she prepares for her time travel and faces challenges along the way.
Brianna’s journey begins with a goodbye to her boyfriend, Roger Wakefield, who offers her a gemstone as a means to return to the future. Brianna leaves Roger behind and sets course for North Carolina to reunite with her family. During her travel, Brianna faces a number of challenges and learns about the many dangers of living in the 18th century.
As she continues her journey, Brianna meets a young Scottish man named Lizzie Wemyss, who takes her under her wing. The two girls strike up an unlikely friendship and continue together on their journey. Along the way, they meet several other characters, including Mr. Forbes, who teaches Brianna how to use a gun for protection.
As Brianna’s journey progresses, she begins to understand the value of trust and the importance of keeping her secrets. She stays wary of outsiders, but learns to trust Lizzie and some of the other people she encounters along the way.
Throughout the episode, the characters encounter many obstacles that test their strength and commitment to the journey. Brianna faces moments of uncertainty and doubt, but ultimately perseveres and makes it to the 18th century.
Once she arrives in the past, Brianna is forced to assimilate to life in the 18th century. She wears traditional clothing, learns to speak with an accent, and takes on a new name, "Bree." Along with Lizzie, Brianna makes her way to Fraser’s Ridge to reunite with her family.
As Brianna approaches Fraser’s Ridge, she sees Jamie from afar and recognizes him immediately. She runs up to him and embraces him, relieved to have finally made it to the 18th century. Claire meets her daughter in the Lallybroch estate and the two share an emotional reunion.
Brianna feels an immediate connection with her family, and is introduced to her newfound family members, including her Aunt Jocasta. Jocasta offers Brianna a strikingly different view of life in the 18th century, and challenges her beliefs and understanding of the role of women in society.
