In the second episode of Outlander season 2, titled "Not in Scotland Anymore," we find Claire and Jamie in France on a mission to stop the Jacobite rebellion and prevent the Battle of Culloden which they know will lead to the end of the Highlander way of life.
The episode begins with their arrival in France, where they are greeted by Jamie's cousin Jared who is a successful wine merchant. Jared has agreed to help them gain access to the French Royal Court so they can try to persuade King Louis XV to withhold his support from the Jacobite cause. Jared also introduces Claire and Jamie to his associates, including the flamboyant and gossipy Comte St. Germain and the mysterious Master Raymond, an apothecary and seer.
As they settle into their new surroundings, Claire and Jamie must navigate the complexities of the French Court and its treacherous politics. With an impending war on the horizon, alliances are made and broken, and danger lurks around every corner. Claire is quickly drawn into the fascinating world of French high society, but finds herself at odds with the etiquette and customs of the time. Meanwhile, Jamie is forced to confront his past and the trauma he suffered at the hands of Black Jack Randall.
As they try to gather information and influence those in power, Claire and Jamie attend various events and meetings, encountering a host of interesting and sometimes dangerous characters. They must use their wits and cunning to navigate these social circles and stay one step ahead of their enemies.
One of the standout moments of the episode comes when Claire attends a lavish dinner party at the home of the Minister of Finance and meets the King's mistress, Madame de Pompadour. It is a fascinating glimpse into the opulence and extravagance of the French Court, and highlights the stark contrast between their current situation and the rustic simplicity of life in the Scottish Highlands.
Throughout "Not in Scotland Anymore," there are moments of levity and heartwarming romance, but also intense drama and suspense. The stakes are high for Claire and Jamie, not only in terms of their mission to save Scotland, but also their own personal safety and wellbeing. As they acclimate to their new surroundings and take on new identities and roles, the question remains whether they will be successful in altering the course of history.
