After being separated for years due to time travel, Claire and Jamie reunite in the late 1700s. Season 2 takes them on a journey to Paris, where they try to prevent the Jacobite uprising and change the course of history.
In episode 1, "Through a Glass, Darkly," Claire finds herself back in her own time period, 1948, after traveling through the stones at Craigh na Dun. She is stunned and disoriented, not knowing how she got there or where Jamie is.
She makes her way to a hospital and is mistaken for a patient due to her outdated clothing. The hospital staff thinks she has amnesia and call her husband, Frank, who thinks she is dead. The emotional reunion is bittersweet as Claire struggles to come to terms with being separated from Jamie once again.
As Claire adjusts to life in the 1940s, she feels lost and out of place. She misses Jamie and the life they shared together in the 18th century. Frank tries to help her but can't understand what Claire has been through. He is fascinated by her stories of the past and spends all his free time researching and trying to find some sort of explanation for what she went through.
Meanwhile, Claire discovers that she is pregnant, but she doesn't know if the baby is Jamie's or Frank's. She is torn between wanting to go back to Jamie and the life she loves and staying with Frank and raising a family.
Throughout the episode, Claire has flashbacks of her time with Jamie and their journey to prevent the Jacobite uprising. She spends time with their French contacts, including the cunning Comte St. Germain, who poses a threat to their plans. Being in the past was dangerous and unpredictable, but Claire felt like she had a purpose and a sense of belonging.
The episode ends with Claire deciding to tell Frank about her time travel and what she went through. She wants to be honest and open with him, but she's not sure how he will react. She also wants to continue to search for a way back to Jamie, but she doesn't know where to begin.
"Through a Glass, Darkly" sets the stage for the rest of the season, as Claire grapples with life in the 20th century while trying to find a way back to Jamie and stop the Jacobite uprising. The episode is emotional and intense, with flashbacks that remind viewers why Claire and Jamie's love story is so captivating.
