Claire, having been arrested for witchcraft, is held captive in a dark cell with other accused women. With no chance of escape, she resigns herself to the fate of being burned alive at the stake. However, she is given a glimmer of hope when Geillis comes to her aid and offers her a way out. Geillis reveals that she too is a time traveler from the future, and that she and her husband have been working to stop Culloden from happening. Claire is shocked to learn that she may not be the only time traveler in Scotland.
Meanwhile, Jamie frantically searches for a way to free Claire from prison. He turns to Ned Gowan, a cunning lawyer, for help. Determined to clear Claire's name, Ned comes up with a plan to prove her innocence. He argues that as a married woman, Claire cannot be tried for witchcraft since Scottish law considers her husband as her legal representative. Jamie is delighted to learn that he has an opportunity to use his marriage to Claire to his advantage.
Back in the prison, Claire is put on trial and is confronted with the accusations against her. She tries her best to defend herself, but the evidence against her is overwhelming. Just as things are looking bleak, Jamie bursts into the courtroom and reveals that he is her husband. He presents the court with a document that proves their marriage, thereby rendering the trial null and void.
Claire is overjoyed to be reunited with Jamie, but her happiness is short-lived when she realizes that Geillis has also been arrested and is set to be burned at the stake. She makes a daring attempt to rescue her friend, but is stopped by the authorities. With no other option, Claire watches helplessly as Geillis is burned alive, her screams echoing through the night.
As they leave the scene, Jamie and Claire are confronted by a distraught Dougal, who has just learned of Geillis's execution. He reveals that he was the one who impregnated her and that their unborn child was the one who was prophesized to become the king of Scotland. Jamie is shocked to learn that his uncle has been conspiring with Geillis to overthrow the current ruler, and realizes that his loyalty to the clan has been misplaced all along.
The episode ends with Jamie and Claire reflecting on the events that have transpired. They both realize that they have been thrown back in time for a reason, and that their actions could have far-reaching consequences. They vow to use their knowledge of the future to make a difference in the past, and to prevent history from repeating itself.
