Outer Banks is an American teen drama series that aired on Netflix in 2020. The show follows a group of teens known as the 'Pogues' who live in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a beach town divided by social and economic boundaries. The Pogues are made up of four friends, John B (Chase Stokes), JJ (Rudy Pankow), Pope (Jonathan Davis), and Kiara (Madison Bailey), who are on a treasure hunt to find the missing fortune of John's long lost father.
John B, who is also the show's protagonist, is a rebel kid who is constantly in trouble with the law, after the death of his father, who was a treasure hunter, he learns about a missing shipment of gold that went down with a ship in the 1800s. John decides to go after the treasure along with his group of friends, but their journey is not an easy one. The group soon gets caught in a web of lies, violence, and deceit as they try to uncover the treasure's location.
Along the way, John and his friends come in contact with the wealthy Kooks, who are the complete opposite of the Pogues. The Kooks are a group of rich kids who reside in an exclusive part of the island and have all the privileges that come with their social status. Complicating matters further, John falls for Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline), a Kook who's more complex than she appears.
Throughout the show, the Pogues and Kooks are constantly at odds, and their conflict intensifies as they both try to locate the treasure. The series immerses the audience into the drama, which is full of action, adventure, romance, and mystery that keeps them glued to their screens.
Outer Banks has a well-crafted storyline that not only focuses on treasure hunting but also on the socioeconomic divide in the Outer Banks. It delves into the themes of class, race, justice, and friendship, and shows how these issues influence the lives of young people living in the area. The show explores their community, which is vulnerable to natural disasters and constantly battling environmental issues, making the quest for treasure all the more important.
The acting in the show is exceptional, with each character offering a unique perspective and backstory. Stokes, who portrays the protagonist John B, steals the show with his portrayal of a reckless, stubborn, and charming teenager. Cline, who plays Sarah, expertly portrays the complexity of her character, who is more than just a rich girl lost in her world of privilege.
The show also features seasoned actors such as Charles Esten and Adina Porter, who both shine in their roles as Ward Cameron and Sheriff Peterkin respectively. Austin North, who plays Sarah's brother, is equally impressive, and Drew Starkey, who portrays Rafe Cameron, is a convincing antagonist with his character's violent tendencies.
Overall, Outer Banks is an excellent action-packed drama series that portrays the lives of teenagers living in the Outer Banks while exploring issues that go beyond treasure hunting. The show combines the elements of adventure and romance with social commentary, and the result is a gripping drama that's worth watching. The season finale sets up the show for future seasons, leaving viewers wanting more.
