Our Friends in the North season 1 episode 7, titled "1984", takes place during the titular year and follows the four main characters as they continue to navigate their way through life. Nicky (Christopher Eccleston) has returned to Newcastle after a stint in London and is now working as a journalist. He becomes involved in a story about a young man who died in suspicious circumstances while in police custody. Nicky's investigation leads him to question the morality of those in power and the integrity of law enforcement in the face of corruption.
Mary (Gina McKee) is now living in London with her husband and young daughter. She struggles to balance her family life with her aspirations for a career in politics. Her husband's unwillingness to support her ambitions causes strain in their relationship, and Mary's own personal demons threaten to sabotage her success.
Geordie (Mark Strong) is still working as a laborer in the shipyards, but he has become disillusioned with the union's lack of effectiveness in protecting workers. When a strike is called, Geordie must decide whether to join the picket line or cross it in order to keep his job and provide for his family.
Tosker (Daniel Craig) is now a successful musician, but his rise to fame has come at a cost. He has sacrificed his relationships with both his former bandmates and his girlfriend, whom he cheated on. As he struggles with the consequences of his actions, he must also confront the reality of his own mortality.
Against the backdrop of the looming miners' strike and the threat of government intervention, all four characters must face their own demons and find a way to navigate the shifting political and social landscape of 1980s Britain. As their paths intersect and diverge, they begin to realize that their friendship may be the only thing keeping them afloat in turbulent times.
