Only Fools and Horses is a British television sitcom that follows the lives of the Trotter family, consisting of brothers Del and Rodney, as they try to make their fortune and become wealthy. Season 5 episode 2, titled "The Miracle of Peckham," sees Del and Rodney in a predicament as they try to sell a statue.
The episode starts with Del and Rodney visiting a local hospital to sell a statue of the Virgin Mary, which they had bought in a house clearance. They hope to make a profit by selling the statue to the highest bidder but discover that the hospital staff are not interested in buying it.
Feeling dejected and with little hope of making any money, Del and Rodney visit a local cafe to have a cup of tea. While there, they hear about a miracle that has taken place in Peckham, where the statue of the Virgin Mary at the local church has started to 'weep' tears of water. The brothers see an opportunity to sell their statue to the church, as their statue also bears the resemblance of the Virgin Mary.
With renewed hope, Del and Rodney make their way to the church and try to convince the parish priest to buy their statue. After some initial resistance, the priest agrees to buy the statue for a price well above what Del and Rodney were asking for. They are ecstatic and believe they have hit the jackpot, but things take a turn for the worse when the priest reveals he wants the statue to be blessed to see if it is a true miracle.
Realizing that their statue is a fake, Del and Rodney are forced to find a way to replace it with a genuine statue. They embark on a desperate search for a replacement and come across a statue that was used in a local play. They buy the statue, but it is too big to fit in their van. In typical Only Fools and Horses fashion, they try various ways to transport the statue, including strapping it to the roof of their van, but all attempts are unsuccessful.
Del's nephew, Michael, comes to their aid and helps them transport the statue to the church. By the time they arrive, the church is packed with people who have come to witness the miracle. Del and Rodney are filled with dread as they think their fake statue will be exposed in front of the entire congregation.
However, as luck would have it, the statue starts to 'weep' just as the priest blesses it. The brothers are overjoyed and relieved, and they realize that their statue is worth more than they initially thought. They decide to sell their statue at a later date to make even more money.
In the end, Del and Rodney's luck changes, and they make a profit off their statue. The episode ends with the brothers sharing a drink at the local pub, discussing their latest adventure and planning their next scheme to make some quick cash.
Overall, The Miracle of Peckham is a classic episode of Only Fools and Horses that showcases the series' trademark humor and clever storytelling. It's a must-watch for fans of the show and anyone who enjoys good, old-fashioned British comedy.
