One Step Beyond season 4 episode 5, Encounter, tells the story of a man named Peter who is struggling with his past. He has a recurring dream where he sees a woman and feels a deep connection to her. One day, while driving through the countryside, he sees the same woman walking on the side of the road. He stops to offer her a ride and they strike up a conversation.
The woman, named Laura, is mysterious and seems to know things about Peter that she shouldn't. She tells him that they have met before, in another life. Peter is skeptical at first, but as they continue to talk, he begins to believe her. Laura seems to have a calming effect on him and he begins to feel like he can finally let go of his past.
As they drive through the countryside, they pass a farmhouse and Laura becomes visibly upset. She tells Peter that she used to live there and that something terrible happened to her daughter. Peter is skeptical at first but decides to investigate further.
He learns that a little girl did in fact die in the farmhouse many years ago. Peter becomes obsessed with the case and begins to have vivid nightmares where he relives the little girl's death. Laura also begins to have nightmares and becomes more and more unstable.
Peter's wife Julia, who is a psychologist, becomes concerned for his well-being and urges him to seek help. Peter initially resists, but eventually agrees. He meets with a therapist who helps him to uncover the root of his obsession with the little girl.
As Peter begins to heal, Laura becomes more and more unstable. She begins to experience hallucinations and becomes convinced that the little girl's spirit is trying to communicate with her. Peter becomes increasingly concerned for her well-being.
In the episode's climactic scene, Peter and Laura return to the farmhouse to try to lay the little girl's spirit to rest. As they perform a ritual, Laura becomes possessed by the little girl's spirit. Peter is forced to confront his darkest fears and must find a way to save Laura before it's too late.
