As the fifth season of the beloved British sitcom One Foot in the Grave nears its end, viewers are gifted with the fifth episode—titled "Hole in the Sky." The comedic series follows the exploits of Victor Meldrew (played by Richard Wilson), a retiree who constantly finds himself in absurd situations.
In this episode, viewers find Victor and his wife, Margaret (Annette Crosbie), prepping for their vacation to Greece. However, their plans quickly get halted when aircraft noise threatens to ruin the peace and quiet of their home. According to Victor, "It sounds like the world's coming to an end."
Although Margaret tries to convince Victor that the noise isn't as bad as he's making it out to be, he's unconvinced and pledges to do anything in his power to stop the annoying sound. Soon enough, Victor discovers that the local airport is expanding and constructing a new runway that will go directly over his home. He tries to protest the construction, but no one takes his complaints seriously.
As the sound becomes more unbearable, Victor comes up with the idea to build a replica of his home and move it somewhere quiet. Margaret thinks it's a poorly thought-out plan, but Victor is determined. He recruits his neighbor, Ron, to help him construct an exact replica of his home brick by brick.
While working on the replica, they discover a time capsule. The capsule, which was meant to be opened in fifteen years, reveals some surprising and humorous items from Victor's past. As they work, Ron grows increasingly concerned with Victor's plan and tries to talk him out of it, but to no avail. Victor stubbornly continues with his plan, with an interesting twist.
As the episode progresses, viewers are treated to a series of hilarious situations as Victor and Margaret try to cope with the construction and their plans to save their home. As always, the show's impeccable writing and acting make every moment entertaining, no matter how absurd the situation may be.
Overall, "Hole in the Sky" is another classic episode of One Foot in the Grave and a fitting end to the show's fifth season. Fans of the show won't be disappointed by the non-stop laughs and brilliant performances from the cast.
