Oh! Edo Rocket is a Japanese television drama that aired on Chiba TV in 2007, and was created by Studio Madhouse. Set in the era of Edo-period Japan, the show follows Seikichi Tamaya, a young fireworks maker who dreams of building rockets that can reach the moon. However, during this time, the Japanese government has banned the use and creation of rockets due to fears of an incoming comet bringing a curse upon the town.

Despite these restrictions, Seikichi becomes determined to achieve his goal and starts to build his own rocket. Along the way, he meets a variety of colourful characters who become involved in his journey including the smart and quirky Sora, the street performer Benkosuke, and the mysterious O-ise. As he navigates his way through the struggles of rocket-making and the danger it brings, Seikichi discovers that the stakes are much higher than he had originally thought.

The show has a fantastic ensemble cast featuring Rie Kugimiya as Sora, Romi Paku as Seikichi Tamaya, Tokuyoshi Kawashima as Benkosuke, and Yoko Soumi as O-ise. Kugimiya delivers a standout performance as Sora, with her pitch-perfect comedic timing and endearing mannerisms. Her character is not only intelligent but also incredibly perceptive, and her presence on the show brings a sense of energy and excitement.

Meanwhile, Paku portrays Seikichi with a certain level of charm that is both endearing and relatable. His dream of rocket-building is not only a reflection of his character but also serves as a metaphor for the show's overarching themes of perseverance and ambition.

The supporting cast also stands out, with Koichi Yamadera as the eccentric government official Sobei, Chika Fujimura as Sobei's daughter Osawa, and Kiyonobu Suzuki as the samurai leader Genzo. Each character adds their own unique flavour and personality to the show and helps to keep the narrative moving forward.

The show's animation is another standout feature, with Studio Madhouse delivering stunning visuals that breathe life into the historical setting. The attention to detail is impressive, with each character and location feeling like they've been pulled straight from the history books.

Overall, Oh! Edo Rocket is a delightful blend of comedy, action, and historical drama that keeps viewers engaged from start to finish. Its themes of perseverance and ambition resonate strongly with audiences, while its memorable cast of characters adds heart and humour. If you're looking for an entertaining and engaging watch, then Oh! Edo Rocket is definitely worth checking out.
