The year is 2082 and Earth is under threat from an extraterrestrial force known as the Crogs. In a bid to save their planet, a race of star-faring beings known as the Avatar launch a tournament called the Great Race of Oban to find a pilot who can fly their powerful ship, the Arrow, to victory and receive the ultimate prize - a wish granted by the Avatar.
The second episode of season one, titled "Hostilities Break Out," sees protagonist Eva "Molly" Wei continuing her journey with the Earth team. After narrowly avoiding a Crog attack in the first episode, the team is forced to regroup and formulate a plan of action.
As the competition heats up, tensions between the various teams grow, as they vie for their chance to claim victory. This episode introduces viewers to a number of new characters, including the confident Sul, the mysterious and elusive Spirit, and the ruthless and cunning Toros.
Meanwhile, there is a palpable unease brewing among the Earth team as they begin to question the Avatar's true motives. Doubts about the prize they are fighting for begin to fester, compounded by the fact that no one knows what the Avatar's ultimate wish might be. As tensions rise and loyalties are tested, it seems that the real challenge facing the Earth team may not be the race but rather the murky politics surrounding it.
As the episode reaches its climax, hostilities break out between the various racing teams, leading to a series of intense battles in the skies above Oban. Viewers are treated to some breathtaking animation as the ships engage in thrilling dogfights and evasive maneuvers. The episode ends on a cliffhanger as the Earth team narrowly avoids disaster, but it is clear that the dangers they face are far from over.
