Danny Boy is the sixth episode of the sixth season of NYPD Blue. This episode is directed by Mark Tinker and written by Nicholas Wootton. The running time for this episode is approximately 43 minutes.

The episode starts with Detective James Martinez and Detective Diane Russell are on the way to the crime scene. Russell is trying to get over her emotions from the last case and Martinez seems to be trying to offer his support. Once they arrive at the scene, they find a homeless man who has been beaten badly. They identify him as Danny Padilla, a former cop who got discharged as he was drunk on duty. The detectives try to find out who is responsible for the attack on Padilla. Andy Sipowicz, John Kelly, and Bobby Simone also work on the case from the 15th squad.

While investigating, the detectives discovered that Padilla had gone undercover to work on a narcotics case. He had infiltrated a drug gang to gather evidence for the police department. However, he got addicted to drugs during his time undercover, and after his cover was blown, he became homeless. His partner who was also working undercover, Tommy Richardson has been hit with heart problems and hospitalized at Manhattan General. The detectives questioned him extensively to get leads.

Meanwhile, John Irvin meets Sylvia Costas and the two discuss their professional career opportunity and the feelings they had for each other. While Sylvia was talking over the phone, John gets a call from Jill Kirkendall, some of his old colleagues had been in a domestic violence case and is being held at the precinct. Irvin is surprised to know that his peers had been involved. The victim alleges that both officers had beaten her. Irvin gathers evidence that one of the suspects had lied to his superiors and the entire situation was entirely messed up.

Back to the case of Danny Padilla, Russell and Martinez work together and manage to get hold of the drug gang member in the hospital. After a chat with him, they realize that another gang member is claiming the responsibility of the attack. The detectives track the second member down and bring him to the precinct for questioning. After some intense interrogations, the detectives managed to extract a confession out of the perpetrator.

The episode ends with the detectives priding themselves on getting someone to confess. The perpetrator eventually revealing who ordered the attack to happen. The detectives were happy that justice would be served, and they would be able to make their case. The episode ends with them walking out of the interrogation room, still needing to pursue the investigation and find out who Danny’s attackers were working for.

The show NYPD Blue is a crime drama that ran from 1993 to 2005 on ABC. The show goes full-throttle into police work, including its ups and downs, the camaraderie and animosity between cops, and how the job affected their personal lives. Danny Boy was a powerful episode that delved into the seedy underworld of drugs and took viewers on a journey through the seedy streets of New York. The episode was intense and gritty, and it lived up to the show's reputation for depicting the harsh realities of life on the beat.
