In the eleventh episode of NYPD Blue's third season, titled "Burnin' Love," Detective Andy Sipowicz faces some personal and professional challenges. Andy's marriage is on the rocks due to his unfaithfulness, and he's having problems dealing with the aftermath of that. Additionally, he's facing disciplinary action at work because he punched a suspect in the face.
As the episode opens, Andy is at home with his wife, Sylvia. She's angry with him for cheating on her, and the two argue about it. Andy apologizes and tries to make it right with her, but she's not interested. Later, Andy meets with Lieutenant Fancy, who informs him that he's facing a disciplinary hearing because of the suspect he punched. Andy is upset and threatens to quit the force.
Meanwhile, Detective Martinez is investigating a string of arsons in the city. He and his partner, Detective Medavoy, interview a witness who claims to have seen a man running from one of the fires. They're able to get a sketch of the suspect and start looking for him.
At the police station, Detective Diane Russell is dealing with her own personal issues. Her ex-boyfriend, Bobby Simone, has returned to the force after being out on medical leave for months. Diane is struggling to deal with Bobby's return, particularly because he's now working in the same precinct as she is. She's worried that it will be awkward between them, but Bobby assures her that he's over their relationship and is just looking to be friends.
As the investigation into the arsons continues, Martinez and Medavoy identify a suspect named Eric. They bring him in for questioning, but he denies any involvement in the fires. Martinez and Medavoy aren't convinced, however, and continue to put pressure on him.
Back at home, Andy is trying to reconcile with Sylvia. He tells her that he loves her and wants to make things right between them, but she's hesitant to forgive him. Later, Andy meets with the disciplinary review board and argues his case. He's able to convince them not to fire him, but he's still facing a suspension and a demotion.
Meanwhile, Martinez and Medavoy are able to gather enough evidence to arrest Eric for the arsons. As they're taking him into custody, Eric confesses to starting the fires because he was angry with his ex-girlfriend.
In the final scene of the episode, Diane and Bobby have a heart-to-heart about their relationship. Bobby tells her that he still cares about her, but he understands if she's not ready to move on yet. The two of them share a poignant moment before parting ways.
Overall, "Burnin' Love" is an intense and emotional episode that delves into the personal and professional lives of the detectives of the NYPD's 15th precinct. It's a great example of the show's ability to balance complex character arcs with compelling police procedural storylines.
