Nurse Jackie season 4 episode 4, "Slow Growing Monsters," follows Jackie Peyton, a quick-witted and flawed nurse in a bustling emergency ward. The episode begins with Jackie receiving an unwanted surprise from her estranged husband as she's getting ready for work. Meanwhile, Zoey, Jackie's young and enthusiastic protégé, is struggling to keep up with the demands of her job and her classes. Her struggles appear to have caught the attention of Dr. Carrie Roman, a new surgery resident who is quickly making her mark at All Saints Hospital.
As Jackie navigates her way through yet another day of chaos and difficult patients, she finds herself drawn to a man who is suffering from an unusual and complicated medical condition. The man, who has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, is reluctant to undergo treatment for fear of losing his ability to speak. Despite Jackie's best efforts to convince him to seek treatment, he remains adamant that he would rather die than lose his voice.
As the man's condition deteriorates, Jackie begins to question her own choices and priorities. She realizes that she, too, has been avoiding difficult decisions, especially when it comes to her relationship with Eddie, her former lover and drug dealer. When she finally confronts him, she discovers that he has been keeping a secret from her that could change everything. Meanwhile, Zoey finds a new ally in Dr. Roman, who offers her guidance and support in her quest to balance work and school.
As the episode comes to a close, Jackie is forced to confront some uncomfortable truths about herself and the choices she's made.
