In "Numb3rs" Season 2 Episode 7, titled "Convergence," the FBI team is called in to investigate a series of bank robberies. The robbers seem to be perfectly organized and efficient, leaving no trace of evidence behind. Charlie Eppes (David Krumholtz), a mathematician who helps his brother Don (Rob Morrow) with the case, realizes that the robbers are using a set of equations that relies on the concept of "convergence."
Charlie explains to his brother that convergence is a mathematical concept that describes how a sequence of numbers or functions approaches a limit. In this case, the robbers are using convergence to predict the exact timing of their heists based on a set of variables that include the bank's location, the position of the sun and moon, and the time of day. Armed with this knowledge, the FBI team is able to predict the robbers' next target and set up a sting operation.
Meanwhile, Charlie is also working on a project that deals with convergence. He is trying to develop a mathematical model that can predict earthquakes more accurately by analyzing seismic data. At the same time, he is also struggling with his relationship with Amita (Navi Rawat), his former student and current girlfriend. Amita is frustrated with the lack of progress on their joint project and doesn't understand why Charlie is so obsessed with finding the perfect mathematical formula.
As the investigation progresses, the FBI team uncovers a surprising connection between the bank robbers and Charlie's earthquake project. It turns out that the robbers are using the same mathematical model that Charlie is developing to predict the magnitude and location of seismic activity. This realization leads the team to a group of rogue scientists who are using the earthquake data for their own nefarious purposes.
In the end, the FBI team is able to catch the bank robbers and dismantle the rogue scientists' operation. Charlie's relationship with Amita is also resolved, and they are able to continue their work together. "Convergence" is a thrilling episode that showcases the power of mathematics in solving complex real-world problems.
