In the Numb3rs season 2 episode 10, titled "Bones of Contention," the FBI's Violent Crimes Squad is called in to investigate the discovery of a human skull in the Los Angeles River. With no other remains in sight, it's up to mathematician Charles Eppes (David Krumholtz) and his team at the California Institute of Science (CalSci) to help identify the victim and hopefully figure out who is responsible for the death.
As they begin their investigation, the team discovers that the skull may be linked to a series of murders that took place over a decade ago. The murders involved several girls who all attended the same high school, and while the case was closed with no one ever being charged or convicted, it's clear that the killer is still out there.
To complicate matters, the team learns that one of the victims, Rebecca, was the sister of Charlie's old flame, Anna. Struggling to remain objective and keep his personal feelings out of the investigation, Charlie finds himself torn between his loyalty to the FBI and his desire to help Anna find closure.
As the team works to identify the victim and follow the trail of evidence, they uncover a web of deceit and betrayal that stretches back over a decade. With each new discovery, it becomes clear that the killer may be closer than anyone ever suspected.
Meanwhile, Agent Megan Reeves (Diane Farr) is struggling to deal with personal issues of her own. As her relationship with her boyfriend heats up, she finds herself wondering if her career with the FBI is really what she wants. With pressure mounting from all sides, Megan is forced to confront some difficult truths about her life and her future.
As the investigation reaches its conclusion, Charlie and the team must race against time to catch the killer before he strikes again. With their skills in mathematics and forensics, they are able to piece together the clues and finally close the case that has haunted the city for over a decade.
In "Bones of Contention," the team faces one of their toughest and most emotional cases yet. With a complex web of suspects, personal connections, and long-buried secrets, they must use all their skills and expertise to bring a killer to justice.
