A body discovered in the Alps in 1991 has baffled investigators and scientists for decades. The body, referred to as the "Iceman" or "Ötzi," is believed to be over 5,000 years old and the questions surrounding his death have never been fully answered. In NOVA's season 39 episode 4, "Iceman Murder Mystery," investigators, forensic scientists, and archaeologists team up to unravel this ancient mystery.

The episode begins with a brief overview of the discovery of Ötzi's body, found frozen and mummified in the Ötztal Alps between Austria and Italy. The body was incredibly well-preserved, including clothing and equipment, and is believed to have been a member of a hunter-gatherer community in the area at the time.

Forensic experts, like Dr. Albert Zink, have been studying the Iceman since his discovery, attempting to piece together his life and eventual death. Dr. Zink has been using a combination of radiography, CT scans, and 3D modeling to study the body and determine how he died. One of the biggest clues to Ötzi's death was found in an x-ray of his head, which showed a small but significant injury to his skull.

The rest of the episode focuses on the techniques used by investigators to determine Ötzi's cause of death, including the use of cutting-edge forensics technology to create a digital replica of his skull. By studying the location, shape, and dimensions of the skull fracture, investigators hope to recreate the events leading up to his death.

Another important piece of evidence in the case is a small arrowhead found lodged in Ötzi's shoulder. The arrowhead, made of flint, is believed to have been the cause of his death. Forensic anthropologist Dr. Frank Rühli travels to the site where the arrowhead was discovered to collect samples for DNA analysis, in the hopes of identifying the culprit.

In addition to the physical evidence, archaeologists and historians are also enlisted to piece together the historical context of the Iceman's death. Stephanie Panzeri, an archaeologist, studies the artifacts found with Ötzi, including a copper ax believed to have come from a community of people living over 100 miles away. This suggests an inter-community trade network and changes the narrative of what was possible for early humans in the area.

Throughout the episode, the team's investigation leads to a number of interesting discoveries, including the precise moment of Ötzi's death and his movements in the days leading up to it. The team also uncovers new information about his diet, lifestyle, and overall health, providing a glimpse into the life of an individual from the Copper Age.

Overall, "Iceman Murder Mystery" is a fascinating examination of an ancient unsolved crime. Through a combination of forensic science, archaeology, and historical context, the team is able to piece together a clearer picture of Ötzi's death and the world in which he lived. The episode offers a unique perspective on early human life, and the way in which scientific investigation can shed light on the mysteries of the past.
