Ep 1. Pilot

In the pilot episode of Northern Exposure, we are introduced to Dr. Joel Fleischman, a young medical graduate from New York City who finds himself in Cicely, Alaska, as part of a scholarship program that requires him to work in a rural area. Joel is initially unhappy with his new surroundings, particularly the harsh weather and the fact that the local post office does not have his forwarding address. These include Ed Chigliak, a young Native American who works part-time at the radio station; Chris Stevens, a philosophical DJ who runs the town's only bar; and Holling Vincoeur, a gruff but kind-hearted restaurateur who has been in a long-term relationship with Shelly Tambo, a much younger woman.

In the course of the episode, Joel comes to appreciate some of the unique qualities of life in Cicely, such as the stunning natural beauty and the strong sense of community. He also has several humorous and poignant encounters with the townsfolk, including a run-in with a moose and a conversation with a dying man who wants to be buried in his favorite fishing spot. By the end of the episode, Joel has started to feel a sense of belonging in Cicely, even as he struggles to adjust to this new way of life.
