Renge, Natsumi, and Komari are playing a game of "Don't Step on the Colored Leaves" when they notice that Hotaru has been wandering around aimlessly. They ask her what's wrong, and Hotaru admits that she had a scary dream the previous night. In the dream, she became a ghost and was unable to communicate with her friends. The girls try to comfort her but end up scaring her even more when they start telling ghost stories.

Later, when Renge and Hotaru are walking home together, Renge asks if Hotaru really believes in ghosts. Hotaru admits that she's never seen one but thinks that they exist. She explains that her family runs an inn, and she's heard some strange stories from guests who claim to have seen ghosts. Renge jokes that maybe the inn is haunted, but Hotaru insists that it's not.

The next day, the girls are on their way to school when they hear a strange noise coming from the woods. They investigate and find a grave with offerings on it. They assume that it's a ghost's grave and Hotaru becomes frightened once again. To calm her down, the girls decide to perform a ritual to appease the ghost. They realize that they don't have any offerings, so they start gathering things from around the woods, including a frog and Komari's ribbon. When they finally have enough offerings, they perform the ritual and ask the ghost to leave them alone.

After school, the girls go to the candy store and buy some snacks. Renge shows off her new "headphones" that she made by tying two erasers to string and putting them in her ears. Hotaru is impressed by Renge's creativity but advises her not to wear them outside because she might get teased. Renge realizes that Hotaru is right and decides to take them off.

On their way home, the girls notice that the offerings they left at the ghost's grave are gone. They start to panic but realize that they forgot to tell the ghost to take the offerings with it. They go back to the grave and perform the ritual again, this time remembering to tell the ghost to take the offerings.

As they continue walking home, Renge notices that her "headphones" are missing. She realizes that she must have dropped them at the candy store and goes back to look for them. Hotaru offers to come with her, but Renge insists that she'll be fine on her own. When Renge returns, she is overjoyed to have found her "headphones." As they continue walking home, Hotaru admits that she's still a little scared and asks if she can walk with Renge. Renge happily agrees.

The episode ends with the girls sitting by the river, watching the sunset. They discuss the possibility of ghosts existing and what they might be like. Komari suggests that they might be like friendly spirits and that they shouldn't be afraid of them. The girls agree and decide to visit the ghost's grave again to see if any new offerings have appeared.

Overall, "I Became a Ghost and Tried Hard Broadcast" is a heartwarming episode that explores the girls' fears and superstitions. The episode is filled with charming moments that showcase the girls' friendship and creativity. It's a must-watch for fans of Non Non Biyori and a great introduction to the series for newcomers.
