The show Non Non Biyori follows the lives of four classmates who attend the only school in their rural town of Asahigaoka, Japan. In season 1 episode 5, titled "I Pretended I Forgot My Swimsuit," the girls are excited about their upcoming field trip to the nearby town of Mitaka. The purpose of the trip is to visit a pool complex, which the girls are thrilled about since they rarely get to leave their small town.
As they plan for the trip, each girl's personality and interests shine through. Natsumi, the tomboy of the group, boasts about her swimming abilities and tricks she wants to try in the pool. Komari, the oldest of the group, worries about looking cute in her swimsuit and impressing her crush. Renge, the youngest of the group, is just excited about the idea of swimming and going on a trip with her friends. Hotaru, the newest member of the group, is the most reserved and simply looks forward to experiencing new things.
As the day of the trip arrives, the girls eagerly gather at the train station to board their train. Along the way, they encounter some unfamiliar sights and sounds, such as a crowded train with businessmen in suits and a loudspeaker announcing the stops in Japanese. Hotaru, who is from Tokyo, is used to these things but finds joy in watching her new friends experience them for the first time.
Once they arrive at the pool complex, the girls change into their swimsuits and are ready to jump in the water. However, Komari realizes that she has forgotten her swimsuit and panics. Hotaru comes to the rescue by lending her a spare swimsuit she brought just in case. This act of kindness helps to showcase the growing bond between the girls.
As they swim and play, the girls have fun in their own unique ways. Natsumi tries to impress her friends with her swimming skills, but ultimately ends up diving into the wrong pool. Renge discovers a strange creature and attempts to catch it, only for it to slip away. Komari struggles to impress her crush, but Hotaru helps her to feel more confident.
Overall, the episode focuses on the girls' experiences as they venture outside of their small town and encounter new sights and sounds. It also highlights the budding friendships between the girls and their willingness to help each other out. The episode ends with the girls waving goodbye to the pool complex and excitedly anticipating their next trip.
