Noblesse, a South Korean webtoon, has been adapted into a Crunchyroll original series of the same name. The show is directed by Yasutaka Yamamoto and animated by Production I.G. Noblesse premiered on October 7, 2020, and is available with English subtitles. The show is about Cadis Etrama di Raizel, the titular "Noblesse," who has been asleep for centuries and wakes up in modern-day South Korea. Raizel is a powerful Noble who possesses incredible speed, strength, and other advanced abilities. Upon waking up, Raizel goes to investigate the modern-day world and quickly comes across a high school where he saves a student, named Han Yuna, from a group of hostile individuals. Han Yuna is grateful to Raizel and introduces him to her friends- Shin Woo, Ik-Han, and Yoo-Mi. Raizel then enrolls in the school with Han Yuna and her friends.
Gradually, the threats and dangers lurking in the shadows begin to reveal themselves. The previous Lord, who was believed to be dead, has escaped his sealed location, and it is now in Raizel's hands to stop him from wrecking havoc on the world. Joining Raizel in his crusade to save humanity is Frankenstein, his devoted butler. Frankenstein is a loyal servant to Raizel and will do everything in his power to protect him.
Raizel has a somewhat stoic personality, which is fitting since he is a nearly omnipotent being with a tragic backstory that involves his old friend, Muzaka. Muzaka is a former Noble who was driven to a bloody rampage because of losing his mate and child. This tragic event leads Raizel to entrusting Frankenstein with his life and preservation, as his existence threatens the world's balance. When Raizel enters the school, he is often pleasantly surprised by human ethics and behaviors. With his profound abilities and super strength, Raizel soon becomes the center of attention at school, and his actions often cause the students to become involved in the conflicts that surround him.
The show features an array of dynamic and well-crafted characters, each with their own unique abilities, personalities, and goals. The show's protagonist, Raizel, is always seeking ways to prevent harm from coming to those he loves, which causes him to act in a rather overprotective manner. Frankenstein is very loyal to Raizel, going as far as subjugating other powerful beings who oppose him in various ways. Han Yuna is a persistent and dedicated young woman. Shin Woo is a loyal friend and ace athlete at school. Ik-Han is the resident nerd among the group, and Yoo-Mi is a reserved student who observes from afar.
The animation, graphics, character designs, and other visual aspects of the show are all high-grade. The show features remarkable action scenes that showcase the characters' abilities while still ensuring that the plot remains compelling. The backgrounds and artwork generally fit well with the tone, from the Gothic architecture to the various uniforms worn by the different factions. The character designs are also quite impressive, with each character having distinctive features that make them stand out from the rest. The anime is set up in such a way that it can appeal to a wide audience, ranging from younger viewers who prefer the action scenes and character designs to older audiences who might find the deeper philosophical and existential themes present throughout the show.
In addition to the show's animation and visuals, the sound quality is equally noteworthy. The voice acting is excellent, with each voice actor accurately conveying the different characters' emotions and attitudes. Chris Hackney plays Raizel, and he delivers his lines with a commanding presence that fits well with the character's personality. Cristina Valenzuela gives an energetic and lively performance as Han Yuna, while John Omohundro gives a delightfully nerdy and quirky performance as Ik-Han.
Overall, Noblesse is an enjoyable anime with a captivating plot, and dynamic characters that are sure to captivate a broad audience. The show's pacing is consistent, and the action scenes are executed in a way that maintains suspense throughout the story. The show presents plenty of twists and turns, with new revelations about the characters revealed over time. The show is well-balanced in terms of its philosophical themes, humor, romance, and its various action scenes. It delivers a wide range of emotions from start to finish, and it has the potential to become a fan favorite that will keep entertaining viewers long after the final episode concludes.
