As the ninth episode of Nisekoi season 2 begins, the students of Bonyari High School are preparing for their annual cleanup day. Raku and Chitoge are tasked with cleaning the library, but the two struggle to work together due to their persisting awkwardness and insecurity.
Their awkwardness stems from their previous quarrel about their fake relationship. Raku is still uncertain about his feelings for Chitoge, and Chitoge is also uncertain about her own feelings towards Raku. The two try to put these feelings aside and focus on the task at hand, but their awkwardness only prolongs the cleaning process.
Meanwhile, Kosaki and Ruri are also assigned to a clean-up duty, but they are assigned to visit the sick at the hospital. The two take on their task with determination, but as they visit various patients, they encounter an old acquaintance, Marika. Marika is battling an illness, and Kosaki and Ruri are able to cheer her up by bringing some of her favorite snacks and a heartfelt message.
As they continue their visit, Kosaki and Ruri encounter another patient, who they soon realize is Raku's mother. Raku's mother is recovering from an illness, and Kosaki and Ruri are happy to see her in good spirits. They tell her about Raku's current attempts at resolving the fake relationship situation between himself and Chitoge.
Back at the library, Raku and Chitoge finally finish their cleaning task, and while they are able to work together, they still remain at a distance. As they clean up, Raku finds a book entitled "A Promise Made on That Night," which is a story he wrote when he was younger. The story tells the tale of two young children who make a promise to marry each other someday, but they soon forget about it as they grow up and become preoccupied with other things.
Raku realizes the similarities between the story and his own situation with Chitoge. He considers the possibility that he and Chitoge may have made a similar promise when they were younger. This thought brings a new perspective to Raku's feelings towards Chitoge.
As the episode concludes, Raku and Chitoge have another conversation about their relationship. Raku reveals his discovery of the book, and Chitoge is surprised but touches when Raku tells her that it reminded him of their own situation, and that he wants to make things right between them.
All in all, episode 9 of Nisekoi season 2 was another eventful episode, highlighting the ongoing relationship issues between Raku and Chitoge, while also showcasing the wholesome and heartwarming moments between Kosaki, Ruri, and the hospital patients.
