Niko and the Sword of Light is an animated television series produced by Amazon Studios that premiered on the platform in July of 2017. The show is based on a Kickstarter-funded pilot that first aired in 2015, and it tells the story of a young boy named Niko who sets out on a quest to save his world from the darkness that has enveloped it.

At its heart, Niko and the Sword of Light is a classic hero's journey, complete with magical powers, fantastical creatures, and an epic battle between good and evil. The show begins with Niko waking up in a world shrouded in darkness, where he immediately encounters a group of warrior-like beings called the Lightbound. They inform Niko that their world has been overrun by a powerful sorcerer named Nar Est, who has stolen the titular Sword of Light and plunged the world into darkness. With the help of his new friends, Niko sets out on a quest to reclaim the sword and defeat Nar Est.

One of the most striking things about Niko and the Sword of Light is its visual style. The show is animated using a unique blend of 2D and CGI animation, which gives it a distinctly modern feel while still maintaining a colorful, cartoonish look. The world of the show is populated by all manner of bizarre creatures, from giant spiders to flying fish to sentient robot beasts, and the animation does a great job of bringing these creatures to life in a way that is both imaginative and visually arresting.

The show also benefits from a strong voice cast that includes Andre Robinson as Niko, Kari Wahlgren as Lyra, one of the Lightbound warriors who accompanies Niko on his quest, and Tom Kenny as Mandok, a cynical inventor who joins the group later in the series. Robinson in particular does an excellent job of bringing Niko to life, imbuing the character with a sense of youthful energy and enthusiasm that makes him an engaging protagonist.

While the show is undeniably aimed at kids, it has a surprising amount of depth for an animated series. Niko's journey is fraught with obstacles and challenges, and he is forced to confront some difficult truths about himself and the world around him as he moves closer to his goal. The show also explores themes of loss, grief, and redemption in a way that is both poignant and age-appropriate.

All in all, Niko and the Sword of Light is a fun, engaging series that is sure to captivate younger viewers while still offering plenty of entertainment value for adults. Its unique visual style, well-drawn characters, and surprisingly mature storytelling make it a standout addition to Amazon's animated lineup. Fans of other modern animated shows like Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, and Steven Universe are sure to find plenty to love in this imaginative and engaging series.

Niko and the Sword of Light is a series that ran for 2 seasons (24 episodes) between July 24, 2017 and on Amazon Studios
