In the ninth episode of Nightwatch season six, titled "Why We Serve," viewers are taken inside the lives of the brave first responders who are dedicated to keeping the streets of New Orleans safe. The episode begins with a high energy introduction to the A-shift team: Holly, Nick, and Keeley. As soon as they arrive at their station, they immediately set out on their patrols, prepared to take on any challenges that may come their way.
The A-shift team quickly receives their first call of the night, as they're dispatched to a shooting victim. As they rush to the scene, Holly prepares for the worst, recalling how the last shooting victim she encountered did not survive. The team arrives to find a young man suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Holly and Keeley jump into action, providing aid and comfort to the victim while Nick assists the other officers in investigating the crime.
As the night wears on, the A-shift team responds to a variety of different calls, ranging from a car crash to a young child who has stopped breathing. Through it all, viewers get a glimpse into the intense emotions and quick decision-making skills that make these first responders so invaluable to the community. Holly recalls a particularly difficult call she responded to in which a father had to watch as his son drowned in a swimming pool. She explains that it's moments like these that make it all worth it - the ability to help others in their time of need is what drives her to serve.
Throughout the episode, other members of the Nightwatch team are shown doing what they do best. Titus and Dan are dispatched to a bar fight, where they must use all of their training to de-escalate the situation and prevent further violence. Meanwhile, Tia and her partner Brian work the overnight shift at the EMS dispatch center, fielding emergency calls and dispatching ambulances to those in need.
As the night progresses, the team is reminded once again of the risks that come with their job. While on patrol, Holly and Keeley come across a group of young men who are visibly armed. Holly immediately calls for backup, and the team springs into action. The situation is tense, but ultimately the Nightwatch team is able to diffuse the situation without any injuries.
As the sun begins to rise on a new day, viewers are left with a sense of awe and admiration for these brave first responders, who put their lives on the line every day to keep their community safe. "Why We Serve" is a powerful reminder of the importance of first responders and the sacrifices they make in the line of duty.
