In the season 3 premiere of Night Court titled "Hello, Goodbye", Judge Harry T. Stone (played by Harry Anderson) returns to the chaotic courtroom after having been kidnapped by aliens during the season 2 finale. While he was away, Dan (John Larroquette) has been running the courtroom in Harry's absence, much to the chagrin of his fellow court officers.
As Harry struggles to readjust to life on Earth, he's faced with a slew of new cases, including a man who's been arrested for stealing a car in order to get to his own wedding, a woman who's been charged with running a brothel out of her apartment and a group of protesters who have been arrested for trespassing.
Meanwhile, Dan is dealing with his own set of problems, including a new boss who's been sent in to oversee the court and whose strict policies are causing major headaches for everyone. To make matters worse, Dan's ex-wife (played by Teri Hatcher) has just landed a job as a public defender in the same courthouse, making for some awkward encounters.
As the episode unfolds, Harry's absence has left a void in the courtroom that Dan is struggling to fill. With his quippy one-liners and quirky sense of humor, Harry is the glue that holds the courtroom together, and without him, things just don't quite feel the same. But as Harry slowly begins to find his footing, he realizes that he's not the only one struggling to adjust.
Many of the cases that come before the court in "Hello, Goodbye" are more complicated than they first appear, and as Harry and his team navigate their way through the legal system, they start to uncover some surprising truths about the people they're tasked with judging. There are moments of levity, of course, including a running gag involving Harry's penchant for wearing outlandish hats, but there are also some truly touching moments that remind us why we fell in love with Night Court in the first place.
Overall, "Hello, Goodbye" sets the tone for what promises to be another wild and wacky season of Night Court. With its lovable cast of characters and zany courtroom antics, it's a show that never fails to entertain.
