Newton's Law is an Australian television series that premiered in 2017. The show follows Josephine Newton (played by Claudia Karvan), a successful Sydney barrister who takes a break from her high-powered legal career to start over in a new phase of her life. She returns to her home town of Ballarat, Victoria, where she sets up a small legal practice and starts to build a new life for herself.

Josephine's decision to leave her old job was not made lightly, as she had built a successful career as a criminal lawyer. However, she felt unfulfilled and burned out, and felt the need for a change in her life. She decides to move back to Ballarat, where she spent much of her childhood, and where her family still lives.

Josephine's new life in Ballarat is not without its challenges. She is starting from scratch and has to build up a client base for her new legal practice. She also has to navigate the tricky waters of small-town politics and deal with the challenges of being a single mother to her teenage daughter, Rose (played by Ella Newton).

Despite these challenges, Josephine is determined to make a success of her new life. She is a skilled lawyer and is able to handle a wide range of legal cases, from family law to criminal law. She is supported in her new venture by her mother, Jean (played by Jane Hall), her legal secretary, Helena (played by Ming-Zhu Hii), and her close friend and former classmate, Lewis (played by Toby Schmitz).

One of the most interesting aspects of the show is the way it explores the dynamics of small-town life. Josephine is from Ballarat, but has been away for many years, and has to relearn the unwritten rules of life in a small town. She also has to deal with the fact that her mother is a prominent figure in town, and that many people have preconceptions about Josephine based on her mother's status.

Another interesting element of the show is the way it deals with family relationships. Josephine's relationship with her mother is complex, as they have very different personalities and approaches to life. Josephine also has to navigate the challenges of being a single mother, and the impact that her decisions have on her daughter.

The show also features a range of interesting and diverse characters, including Brett Tucker as Callum Hann, a local detective who becomes romantically involved with Josephine, and Miranda Tapsell as Bonnie, Josephine's best friend from law school who is now a high-flying corporate lawyer in Melbourne. Georgina Naidu plays Josephine's legal opponent, Diana Lang, who is determined to win her cases at any cost. Sean Keenan plays Luc, a troubled teenager who becomes involved with Josephine's legal practice.

Overall, Newton's Law is an engaging and well-written series that explores the challenges of starting over in life, the dynamics of small-town politics, and the complexities of family relationships. The show features a strong cast of actors, including the talented Claudia Karvan, who gives a nuanced and captivating performance as Josephine Newton. The series is sure to be a hit with fans of legal dramas and small-town stories alike.
