In NewsRadio season 3 episode 8, titled "Movie Star," the staff of WNYX must navigate the chaos that ensues when a Hollywood movie star comes to the radio station for an interview.
The episode begins with the staff eagerly anticipating the arrival of Johnny Johnson (played by guest star John Ritter), a famous actor turned director who is promoting his latest film. The station is abuzz with excitement, especially for Beth (Vicki Lewis) who is a huge fan of Johnny's. However, Dave (Dave Foley), the station's news director, is less than thrilled about the prospect of interviewing a celebrity.
As soon as Johnny arrives, chaos ensues. He is accompanied by a large entourage, including his publicist and personal assistant, who all demand special treatment. Dave tries to keep everything running smoothly, but it quickly becomes apparent that Johnny and his team are more interested in causing trouble than promoting the movie.
Meanwhile, Beth is beside herself with excitement at the prospect of meeting Johnny, but things take a turn when he starts hitting on her. Despite her initial excitement, Beth realizes that Johnny is a sleazy womanizer and tries to avoid him. However, Johnny is persistent and continues to pursue her throughout the episode.
In the midst of all of this, Joe (Joe Rogan) and Matthew (Andy Dick) decide to make a documentary about the making of the interview. They follow Dave around with a camera, documenting his every move. However, their efforts are constantly thwarted by Johnny and his team, who do everything they can to disrupt the filming.
As the chaos continues to escalate, it becomes clear that the interview is not going to go well. Johnny becomes increasingly difficult to work with, and tensions rise between him and the rest of the staff. Eventually, Dave decides to take matters into his own hands and confronts Johnny about his behavior.
What follows is a tense confrontation between Dave and Johnny, in which Dave stands up for the rest of the staff and refuses to let Johnny continue to act like a diva. In the end, Johnny decides to walk out on the interview, leaving the staff to scramble to salvage the segment without him.
Despite the drama, the staff manages to pull off a successful interview without Johnny. Beth remains disappointed by his behavior, but ultimately decides that it's for the best that she didn't get involved with him. And although the documentary didn't turn out quite as planned, Joe and Matthew manage to salvage some footage and create an entertaining segment nonetheless.
"Movie Star" is a classic episode of NewsRadio that perfectly captures the absurdity and chaos of working in the media industry. With its hilarious writing and fantastic guest star performance by John Ritter, it's a must-watch for fans of the show.
