Dick Loudon is a Connecticut innkeeper who now owns an inn in Vermont, along with his wife Joanna. In "Me and My Gayle," the fourth episode of the sixth season, Dick and Joanna encounter someone from their past: Gayle Hunnicutt. Gayle is an old friend of Joanna's and an old flame of Dick's, and she is now in town to attend a conference.
Joanna is excited to see Gayle, but Dick is apprehensive. He suspects that Gayle still has feelings for him and worries that their reunion will make things awkward between him and Joanna. However, when Gayle arrives at the inn, she is accompanied by her boyfriend, David. Dick is relieved, but he soon realizes that David is actually just a friend and that Gayle is still interested in him.
Gayle begins to pursue Dick, leaving him in a difficult position. He is still attracted to her, but he loves Joanna and doesn't want to jeopardize their relationship. Meanwhile, Joanna is growing increasingly suspicious of Gayle and begins to worry that she is trying to steal Dick away from her.
As the episode progresses, Dick and Joanna try to navigate their complicated feelings for Gayle while also dealing with the other guests at the inn. They must contend with a group of motorcycle riders who are causing a ruckus, as well as a pompous writer who is staying at the inn to work on his book.
Despite the various obstacles they face, Dick and Joanna are able to work through their issues and come to a new understanding of their relationship. In the end, they realize that their love for each other is stronger than any temptation that might come their way.
"Me and My Gayle" is a funny and touching episode that explores the complexities of love and temptation. With its engaging characters and witty dialogue, it is a standout installment in the beloved Newhart series.
