Tom Poston as George Utley
In "High Fidelity," the fourth episode of the fifth season of Newhart, Dick Louden and his wife Joanna continue to run their quaint bed and breakfast in rural Vermont, welcoming all sorts of strange and eccentric guests in the process. The latest group of visitors are a group of four middle-aged men who are on a nostalgic trip to relive their college days, and they have the charming yet slightly dim-witted handyman George Utley in tow.
As the men settle into their rooms, Dick and Joanna soon discover that they are here to indulge in their love of rock and roll music. They have brought with them a vast collection of vintage vinyl records, and they plan to spend their entire stay listening to loud music and reminiscing about their youth. Dick and Joanna try to accommodate the men's requests, even going so far as to let them set up a makeshift dance floor in the dining room, but they soon realize that their guests' love of music is going to be a little too much for them to handle.
To make matters worse, George has unwittingly gotten himself stuck in a trunk full of records while trying to help the men set up their sound system. As Dick and Joanna struggle to free George, they begin to wonder what they have gotten themselves into and whether or not they should have even opened up their bed and breakfast in the first place.
Throughout the episode, viewers are treated to hilarious scenes of the men dancing and singing along to their favorite songs, as well as some touching moments as they reminisce about their college years. At the same time, Dick and Joanna's exasperation with their guests and their love of loud music is played for laughs, and their interactions with George provide some of the funniest moments of the entire episode.
Ultimately, "High Fidelity" is a lighthearted and entertaining entry in the Newhart canon, featuring all the quirky characters and witty humor that fans of the show have come to love. Whether you're a die-hard fan of the series or a newcomer to Dick and Joanna's world, this episode is sure to leave you with a smile on your face.
