In "Candidate Larry," the fifth episode of the fourth season of Newhart, the town of Stratford prepares for its upcoming mayoral election. The incumbent mayor, Chester Wanamaker, is running for re-election against a new candidate, Larry, who is a likable outsider with no political experience.

Dick Loudon, owner of the Stratford Inn, becomes involved in the election when Larry asks to hold a campaign event at his inn. Dick agrees, but soon realizes that he may have made a mistake when Larry's enthusiasm for his campaign turns out to be more of a problem than a benefit.

Meanwhile, Joanna, Dick's wife, is put in charge of managing the debate between the two candidates. However, the debate quickly devolves into chaos when it becomes clear that neither candidate has anything substantive to say about the issues facing the town.

As the election approaches, tensions rise between the two candidates and their supporters. Larry's campaign team becomes increasingly aggressive, resorting to smear tactics and dirty tricks in order to gain an advantage. Meanwhile, Mayor Wanamaker insists that he is the only candidate with the experience and knowledge necessary to lead the town.

Through it all, Dick and Joanna try to stay neutral, but find themselves unable to resist getting caught up in the excitement of the election. As the town prepares to cast their votes, they begin to wonder if either of the candidates is truly worthy of their support.

"Candidate Larry" is a hilarious and insightful look at small-town politics, and the ways in which political campaigns can bring out both the best and worst in people. With its witty dialogue and engaging characters, this episode is sure to delight fans of the show and newcomers alike.
