In the fifth episode of season 8 of New Tricks, entitled "Object of Desire," the team at UCOS is tasked with solving a murder that occurred over 15 years ago. The victim, a wealthy businessman named Michael Rix, was found dead in his apartment with several gunshot wounds. The prime suspect at the time was the victim's wife, who was never charged due to lack of evidence.
However, when the victim's daughter, Alice Rix, comes forward with new evidence, the team reopens the case. Alice claims that her mother was innocent and that her father's death was actually a botched robbery. She provides the team with a photo of a valuable diamond necklace that her father owned, and tells them that it was the motive for the robbery.
The team begins to investigate, and quickly learns that there were several people who had motive to steal the necklace, including the victim's business partner and a former employee who was fired shortly before the murder. As they dig deeper, they uncover a web of lies and deceit that leads them to the unexpected killer.
Meanwhile, Gerry has his own personal mission when he discovers that his estranged daughter, Emily, is living on the streets. Desperate to make amends, Gerry takes her in and attempts to reconnect with her. However, his fellow team members are skeptical of Emily's motives and worry that Gerry's emotions may cloud his judgement during the case.
As the investigation continues, the team must navigate through twists and turns that ultimately lead to a shocking revelation about the true identity of the thief and the killer. With their trademark wit and intelligence, the UCOS team takes on another challenging case and reminds us that justice is never served until all parties are held accountable.
