In the eighth episode of New Tricks season 5 titled "Mad Dogs," the UCOS team has their hands full investigating the murder of a young girl who was last seen alive leaving a pub with a shady character. The team quickly discovers that the prime suspect in the case is a former criminal who has been living a life of luxury in Spain thanks to a recent lottery win. Despite being convinced of his guilt, the team struggles to find any concrete evidence tying him to the crime.
Meanwhile, Gerry Standing, played by Dennis Waterman, finds himself in a bit of trouble when his daughter's ex-husband shows up on his doorstep seeking his help. The man is being pursued by a dangerous gang and needs a place to hide out for a few days. Gerry agrees to help him, but soon realizes that he may have bitten off more than he can chew.
As the investigation into the murder continues, the team discovers that the victim may have been involved in some shady business dealings with a group of wealthy dog owners. The group, who refer to themselves as "Mad Dogs," are obsessed with breeding champion fighting dogs and will stop at nothing to protect their lucrative business.
All the while, tensions are rising within the team.
