In the opening scene of season 4 of New Tricks, we see Gerry and Sandra scoping out the woman’s restroom at a posh dinner party, looking for a stolen necklace. Gerry spots a woman wearing a piece of the necklace and Sandra approaches her to distract her so they can try to get it back. Things go awry when the woman’s husband shows up and starts yelling at them, causing a scene.
The next day, Danny and Jack arrive at the office discussing their weekend plans. Danny mentions a new pub he’s found, but Jack is preoccupied with a letter he’s received from his daughter. She’s invited him to her upcoming wedding, but she’s asked him not to bring anyone else. Jack is hesitant to attend without letting his colleagues know, but Brian assures him it’s fine and rips up the invitation for him.
Meanwhile, Gerry meets with his ex-wife Emily and their daughter Cassidy. Emily is worried about Cassidy’s boyfriend and asks Gerry to talk to him. Gerry agrees, but is dubious of the boy’s intentions and decides to do some investigating of his own.
The team is working on the case of a man named William Pope who was found dead in his house. The cause of death is initially ruled as natural causes, but his neighbor, who is also a nurse, isn’t convinced. She tells the team that she’d been checking on William regularly and that he’d been in good health. The team starts to investigate and discovers that William had recently taken out a reverse mortgage on his house. They also find a letter in his possession that indicates he’d been planning to go on a trip to Barbados. The team comes to the conclusion that William was murdered and set out to find the killer.
During their investigation, they discover a suspicious elderly care facility called God’s Waiting Room. They send Gerry in undercover to investigate and he quickly befriends a resident named Alfie. Gerry discovers that there is more going on at God’s Waiting Room than meets the eye and that some of the residents are being mistreated.
As the team delves deeper into William’s murder, they discover that he’d been targeted by unscrupulous mortgage brokers who had convinced him to take out the reverse mortgage. They had even forged his signature on the documents. When William had second thoughts and wanted to cancel the mortgage, the brokers had killed him to ensure they got the money.
Meanwhile, Jack is struggling with his decision to attend his daughter’s wedding alone. He confides in Brian, who offers to go with him as his friend. Jack is hesitant at first but eventually agrees. He shows up at the wedding with Brian and tells his daughter that he’s happy for her, but wishes things could have been different. He dances with his daughter and reconciles with her.
In the end, the team is able to bring William’s killers to justice and Gerry is able to help the residents of God’s Waiting Room by exposing the conditions at the care facility. Jack comes back to the office a changed man, grateful for the support of his colleagues and the opportunity to reconnect with his daughter. The episode ends on a positive note, with the team looking forward to their next case.
