In New Tricks season 3 episode 2, titled "Dockers," the team is tasked with solving the murder of a docker who was found dead at the Thames river. The victim, Tony Ellis, was well-liked by his co-workers, but the investigation reveals that he had a few secrets.
The team members, headed by Superintendent Sandra Pullman (played by Amanda Redman), start by questioning Ellis's former boss, Harry Langton (played by Richard Griffiths), who was known to be a bit of a tyrant. Langton shares some valuable information, including the fact that Ellis was planning to meet with a union representative regarding unfair working conditions.
Meanwhile, Brian Lane (played by Alun Armstrong) decides to go undercover as a docker to get a better understanding of the working conditions at the docks. He quickly discovers that the management is corrupt and that the workers are mistreated. This leads the team to suspect that Ellis's murder may have been an inside job, orchestrated by someone from the management.
As the investigation progresses, the team uncovers more secrets about Ellis's personal life. They discover that he was having an affair with his boss's wife and that he was involved in a smuggling ring. These revelations further complicate the case and make it harder for the team to determine who the killer might be.
To add to the mix, Gerry Standing (played by Dennis Waterman) receives a surprise visit from an old friend, who has a connection to the case. Although this friend provides valuable information, it also puts him in danger.
Throughout "Dockers," viewers are treated to the usual banter and humor from the team, as well as some touching moments between the characters. Overall, the episode is a gripping mystery that keeps viewers guessing until the very end.
