Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel) finds herself in a rut in season 6 of New Girl, as she tries to adjust to her new job as a school principal and navigate her relationship with Nick (Jake Johnson). Episode 9, titled "Es Good," finds Jess and Robby (Nelson Franklin) unexpectedly joining each other's Valentine's Day dates.
Jess is still reeling from her relationship upheaval and has decided to spend a solo Valentine's Day wallowing in her sorrows. However, her plans are dashed when her best friend Cece (Hannah Simone) convinces her to go out on the town for a singles night. Meanwhile, Robby is struggling to move on from the breakup with Jess and reluctantly agrees to go on a Valentine's Day double date with Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece.
As fate would have it, Jess and Robby run into each other at their respective dates and decide to switch partners for the night. Jess ends up spending the evening with Schmidt, who pulls out all the stops to make the night memorable for his friend. Meanwhile, Robby discovers a surprising connection with Cece.
The group's V-Day adventure takes them to a German beer hall, where they toast to being single and try to outdo each other with ridiculous drinking games. Through it all, Jess and Robby cope with their unresolved feelings for each other and try to come to terms with their complicated past.
"Es Good" is a classic New Girl episode that blends heartwarming moments with laugh-out-loud humor. Fans of the show will appreciate the return of Robby, who has been absent from the show for most of season 6. The chemistry between him and Jess is as undeniable as ever, and viewers will be left wondering if the two will ever be able to make things work.
As always, the supporting cast shines in this episode. Schmidt continues to be the show's resident scene-stealer, and his efforts to make Jess feel loved and appreciated are both hilarious and heartwarming. Cece, too, has some great moments as she tries to move on from her own relationship troubles.
"Es Good" is a reminder of why New Girl has remained one of the most beloved comedies on TV. The show has always been more than just a sitcom, and this episode is a testament to its ability to balance humor with heart. Whether you're single or in a relationship, this episode is sure to leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside.
