Ep 22. Landing Gear

After the massive cliffhanger at the end of the previous episode, "New Girl" Season 5 Episode 22, entitled "Landing Gear," picks up right where it left off. Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and her gang are stuck on the tarmac of a JFK runway, awaiting their fate after their aircraft couldn't take off due to some mechanical failure. The passengers and crew are all panicking and scrambling to figure out what to do next. Meanwhile, Schmidt (Max Greenfield) is dealing with an entirely different kind of panic back at home, trying to deal with the sudden disappearance of Cece's (Hannah Simone) mother.

At first, everyone on the plane is looking to Jess for guidance, but she's eager to avoid making any decisions that could cause further problems. As time goes on and more and more passengers start to come to her with their problems, she starts to feel overwhelmed and is forced to take the reins. Winston (Lamorne Morris) and Nick (Jake Johnson), who have their own problems to solve, are also on the plane and spend most of the episode trying to deal with their own issues.

The episode is particularly exciting because it balances multiple plotlines, which are all equally engaging and funny in their own right. Jess ends up trying to help a young boy who was on the plane alone, while Schmidt is busy dealing with his own mother- and bride-related issues. Meanwhile, Nick and Winston try to keep themselves sane and entertained amidst the chaos on the plane.

One of the best things about "New Girl" as a show is that it balances the comedy and the drama very well. This episode does a great job of reminding viewers of that fact, as there are times when it's genuinely tense. But at the same time, the comedy in the episode is as strong as ever–funny lines are peppered throughout, and the actors all manage to make their predicaments feel silly and relatable.
